North Macedonia Business Travel Guide: Things to Know

Weather in North Macedonia

North Macedonia has a continental climate, characterised by warm, dry summers and cold, snowy winters. Summer (June to August) is hot, with average temperatures in Skopje ranging from 25 °C to 35 °C. Winters (December to February) are cold, with temperatures in the capital often dropping to between -1oc and 5oc.

Business travellers should pack accordingly and be mindful that mountainous regions, such as Mavrovo National Park, will experience significantly colder temperatures and heavier snowfall in winter.

Currency in North Macedonia

The official currency is the Macedonian Denar (MKD). Euros and other foreign currencies are generally not accepted for payment outside of major tourist hubs. We recommend exchanging currency at banks or official exchange offices. Major credit cards are widely accepted in hotels, larger stores, and restaurants, particularly in Skopje. Smaller establishments will usually require cash (Denar). Tipping is customary in restaurants and for taxi services, typically around 10% if the service charge is not included.

Language spoken in North Macedonia

The official languages are Macedonian (written in the Cyrillic alphabet) and Albanian. In major cities and business settings, English is often spoken, especially by younger generations and in the tourism sector. Learning a few basic Macedonian phrases is always appreciated.

Time Zones in North Macedonia

North Macedonia operates on Central European Time (CET), which is UTC+1. They observe Daylight Saving Time, switching to Central European Summer Time (CEST) (UTC+2) from the last Sunday in March to the last Sunday in October.
