When travelling to a new country understanding the local customs helps you make the most of your stay. Here’s a list of essential information for travelling to Algeria.
The official currency of Algeria is the Algerian Dinar (DZD). While major hotels and large businesses in Algiers and Oran may accept credit cards, cash is the predominant method of payment for daily transactions, particularly outside the main cities. It is important to note that the Algerian Dinar is a non-convertible currency, and there are restrictions on taking it out of the country. Foreign currency exchange is best conducted at official banks and hotels upon arrival. Tipping is appreciated but not mandatory.
The two official languages are Arabic and Tamazight (Berber). However, French is widely used in business, administration, and education due to the country’s colonial history, particularly in the coastal regions. English is less common, though its use is growing, especially within international business circles and major hotels. Learning a few basic phrases in French or Arabic is highly recommended for ease of communication.
Algeria operates on Central European Time (CET), which is UTC+1 (or GMT+1). Algeria does not observe Daylight Saving Time. Business travellers should factor this into their international communication schedules.
Algeria has two main climate zones. The narrow coastal region (the Tell) where the major cities are located, enjoys a Mediterranean climate, characterised by mild, wet winters and hot, dry summers (with average high temperatures often exceeding 30°c in July and August). Inland, the climate quickly becomes arid, transitioning to the vast Sahara Desert with its extremely high summer temperatures and very cold nights in winter. Business travellers should pack accordingly for the coastal heat and sun during summer, and bring lighter layers for the mild winters.
