It is helpful to research the destination prior to traveling. Here’s all the essential information about Malawi to prepare you for your business trip.
Malawi experiences a tropical climate, which is generally hot and has distinct wet and dry seasons. The Dry Season (May to October) is generally cool and dry, making it the most comfortable time for business travel. Temperatures around Lake Malawi are warmer. The Wet Season (November to April) is hot and humid, with the majority of the year's rainfall occurring during this time. Travel, particularly off-road, can be challenging due to heavy rains and the occasional impact of tropical storms.
The official currency is the Malawian Kwacha (MWK). While the Kwacha is the national currency, US Dollars are generally the easiest foreign currency to exchange. Sterling and Euros are also accepted at banks and authorised bureaux de change. While ATMs are available in major cities, power cuts can affect their use. It is wise to carry a reserve supply of cash. Credit cards are accepted mainly at larger hotels and upscale establishments (Visa is often the most reliable). Tipping is not mandatory but is customary for good service, generally around 10% in restaurants and for guides.
The official language is English, which is used in all government and business contexts. The National Language is Chichewa and is widely spoken by the majority of the population. Almost all formal business dealings are conducted in English.
