Serviced apartments provide superior value, comfort, and a stable environment for corporate teams and long-term assignees.
Laos has a tropical monsoon climate with two main seasons. The Wet (or Rainy) season generally runs from May to October. This period is hot and humid, with heavy but typically short-lived rainfall. The Dry Season runs from November to April. This is the cooler, more comfortable period for travel. Temperatures are hottest just before the rains begin (March-April). Be mindful that heavy rain in the wet season can cause localised flooding and disrupt road travel, especially in rural areas.
The official currency is the Lao Kip (LAK). While LAK is the legal currency, Thai Baht (THB) and US Dollars (USD) are widely accepted, particularly for large purchases and in major cities (Vientiane, Luang Prabang). Credit cards (Visa/Mastercard) are accepted in most international hotels and upscale restaurants in Vientiane and Luang Prabang, but cash is essential for smaller vendors and transactions outside the major cities. ATMs are common in large towns. Tipping is becoming more customary in tourist hotels and higher-end restaurants, where a 10% tip is often expected or a service charge is included in the bill.
The official language is Lao (sometimes called Laotian). French is still used in government, commerce, and by older professionals. English is increasingly popular among the younger generation and is generally sufficient for basic communication in major tourist and business areas.
Laos observes a single time zone: Indochina Time (ICT) which is UTC+7. Laos does not observe Daylight Saving Time.
