Zug has a continental climate, with warm summers on the lake, but typical European cold winters. In summer, the days are long and great for swimming, but in winter the weather is much milder, and snowfall is common. We encourage wrapping up warm for winter visits, and lighter jackets in summer.

Business travellers visiting Zug can enjoy a range of activities in the city. In the summer, there’s water sports such as waterskiing, paddleboarding, and windsurfing available on Lake Zug, and opportunities to swim in the lake, and at the pools in Baar and Rotkreuz. At the nearby Canton Schwyz, there is a summer bobsled run for an adrenaline kick, and plenty of nearby golf courses at Holzhausern and Kussnacht am Rigi.

In winter, there are many nearby ski piste resorts such as Sattel-Hochstuckli and Rigi. The Zugerberg and Aegeri valleys are two excellent cross-country skiing areas that can be reached by public transport from Zug. In summer, these valleys are ideal for hiking, with well-signposted trails and areas dedicated to picnics and barbeques.

For a day trip after a busy working week, you can take a cable car or cogwheel train up to Rigi for breathtaking views and sports. Tier-und Naturpark Goldau is a peaceful option, a huge park in the wilderness and home to deer, bears, wolves and lynxes prowl the safety areas of the woods.

Cuisine in Zug

Swiss food is quite hearty, and dairy products find their way into most dishes here. Cheese fondue, a pot of melted cheese which you usually eat as a dip for cubes of bread or potatoes - is widely served, as is rosti, which is grated potatoes topped with cheese, ham or a fried egg.

Local products such as Zuger Kirschtorte (cherry brandy layer cake), and Zuger Kirsch (cherry brandy) are popular, and made form the famous cherry trees grown in the canton. Älplermagronen is a hearty winter dish too in this region, similar to gratin with potatoes, macaroni, cheese, cream and onions, served with stewed apple on the side.

Transport in Zug - Getting Around Zug, Switzerland

The Swiss railway network is convenient and punctual, covering the mountains, lakes and cities. All trains between Zurich and Lucerne stop in Zug, making travel swift and easy. Tickets can be bought at the station or online. The multiple journey card is a pass for regular train commuters. It can be purchased for the week, month or year.

The buses in Zug run between 6 am to midnight on a frequent schedule. Alongside a cablecar train which brings you to the top of the Zugerberg mountain.

Walking and cycling can be a great option for corporate travellers staying in Zug. There are many well-marked cycle paths across Zug, and bicycles are available for free from May to October at the train station, Bundesplatz, and the Rathaus.
