Staying in Chennai, India

Collage of Chennai8

Chennai is one of India's most strategically important cities, combining deep industrial heritage with a fast-evolving modern economy. As the capital of Tamil Nadu and a major port city on the Bay of Bengal, it serves as the anchor of South India's commercial landscape. The city is perhaps best known internationally for its dominance in automotive manufacturing, with major global names including Hyundai, BMW, and Renault-Nissan all operating significant operations herealongside a thriving IT services sectorChennai also carries a rich cultural identity, from its devotion to classical Carnatic music and Bharatanatyam dance to its vibrant Tamil film industry. For the international business traveller, it offers a compelling mix of serious commercial infrastructure and genuine cultural depth.

Weather in Chennai

Weather icom

Chennai's tropical coastal climate means warmth and humidity are constants throughout the year, with temperatures typically ranging between 25°C and 38°C regardless of season. Unlike the dramatic seasonal swings of northern Indian cities, the variation here is more subtle, though still worth planning around.

The most comfortable window for business visits tends to be January through March, when temperatures ease slightly and humidity is at its most manageable. The city receives rainfall from two monsoon systems: a Southwest monsoon between June and September, and a Northeast monsoon from October through December, the latter being the more impactful for Chennai, and capable of bringing sustained heavy rainfall that can disrupt road travel. If your visit falls during the Northeast monsoon period, building some flexibility into your schedule is sensible.

Year-round, the coastal breeze along the seafront provides some natural relief from the heat, and several SilverDoor serviced apartments in Chennai include air conditioning, ensuring a comfortable base whatever the season.

Currency in Chennai

Indian Rupee (₹)

India's official currency is the Indian Rupee (₹). In Chennai's main business districts, shopping centres, and restaurants, card payments are broadly accepted, and international Visa and Mastercard cards work reliably at most establishments. It is worth notifying your bank before you travel to prevent any unexpected blocks on your card while abroad.

That said, cash is an everyday necessity in Chennai. Auto-rickshaws, street food vendors, local markets, and smaller shops will typically expect cash payment, and having a ready supply of smaller notes, ₹50, ₹100, and ₹200, will make these transactions considerably smoother. Smaller denominations are also handy for tipping, where rounding up rickshaw and taxi fares is customary and around 10% at restaurants is well received. ATMs are readily available throughout the city's commercial and residential areas.

Health & Wellbeing in Chennai

As with all major Indian cities, tap water is not safe for drinking. Bottled or filtered water should be used throughout your stay, and care is advisable with ice at smaller establishments. Staying well hydrated is especially important given Chennai's consistently high temperatures and humidity.

For those looking to maintain a fitness routine, the city has options both indoors and out. Marina Beach, one of the longest urban beaches in the world, is a popular choice for early morning runs, with the cooler hours before 8am offering the most pleasant conditions before the heat builds. Several SilverDoor serviced apartments in Chennai include on-site gym facilities, and some feature swimming pools, a particularly welcome amenity given the climate.

Data in Chennai

Mobile connectivity in Chennai is strong, with 4G widely available across business and residential areas and 5G expanding rapidly. For stays of more than a few days, a prepaid local SIM from providers such as AirtelJio, or Vi offers considerably better value than international roaming. SIM cards are available at Chennai International Airport on arrival; however, purchasing through your home network provider before departure may offer better value . eSIM options are available through select providers for those who prefer not to swap physical cards, and international eSIMs from services such as Airalo or Holafly can be arranged before departure.

Plug Type in Chennai

India uses Type C, D, and M plugs, with Type D, a three-round-pin plug in a triangular arrangement, most commonly encountered in Chennai. The standard voltage is 230V. If travelling from the UK, US, or continental Europe, packing a universal travel adapter is recommended.

  • 100 — Police
  • 101 — Fire
  • 102 — Ambulance

Cuisine in Chennai

Chennai's food scene is one of the great pleasures of visiting the city, and South Indian cuisine here is widely regarded as among the finest in the country. The culinary tradition is rooted in Tamil cooking - rice, freshly ground spices, coconut, tamarind, and lentils form the backbone of the local diet - but the city's size and diversity mean there is far more to explore beyond regional staples.

A proper South Indian breakfast is not to be missed: crisp dosas, soft idlis, and freshly made filter coffee served in the traditional steel tumbler and davara are fixtures of local life and available at everything from humble street-side stalls to well-regarded restaurants. Chettinad cuisine, originating from a region within Tamil Nadu, is another highlight, bold, aromatic, and distinctly spiced -, it is some of the most characterful cooking anywhere in India.

For international dining options, the areas around Anna Nagar, Nungambakkam, and Alwarpet offer a solid range of restaurants suited to client entertaining or a relaxed evening meal. Vegetarian options are abundant throughout the city, and menus at most restaurants use the standard Indian green dot (vegetarian) and red dot (non-vegetarian) system.

Language and Key Phrases in Chennai

Tamil is the primary language of Chennai and occupies a place of deep cultural importance in the city's identity. Unlike many other major Indian cities, Hindi has a limited presence here, so it is worth keeping this in mind when moving outside of professional environments. English is widely used in corporate settings, hotels, and among business professionals, and will serve you well in most work-related situations. A translation app is a sensible addition for navigating daily life beyond the office.

Even a handful of Tamil phrases will be genuinely appreciated by locals:

  • Vanakkam (vah-nah-kum) — Hello / Greetings
  • Nandri — Thank you
  • Āmām / Illai — Yes / No
  • Epadi irukkeenga? — How are you?
  • Poi varukiren — Goodbye

Transport in Chennai

Chennai has a layered transport network that rewards a little advance planning.

Chennai Metro: The metro covers key areas of the city across two operational lines, connecting Chennai International Airport, Central Station, and several major commercial districts. Phase II expansion is currently underway and will extend the network considerably. The metro runs from approximately 4:30am to 11pm and is the most comfortable and congestion-free option for journeys within its current coverage area.

Suburban Rail: The Chennai Suburban Railway is one of the busiest in India and covers a wide catchment across the metropolitan area, radiating out from Chennai Central and Chennai Egmore stations. It is a practical option for longer cross-city journeys and for reaching the broader metropolitan region.

App-Based Cabs: Uber and Ola operate reliably across Chennai and are the most practical choice for door-to-door travel, particularly for business parks along the OMR that sit outside the current metro footprint. Pre-booking for airport transfers is strongly recommended, especially during peak hours.

Auto-Rickshaws: Useful for shorter local journeys. Always agree a fare in advance or insist on the meter and have cash available.

Traffic: Chennai's road network can be significantly congested during peak hours, typically 8:30–10:30am and 6–9pm. Factoring this into your daily schedule and making use of the metro where possible during these windows will save considerable time.

Business Culture in Chennai

Chennai's professional environment is formal, relationship-oriented, and tends to move at a considered pace. Conservative business attire is expected in corporate settings, suits for men, and professional modest dress for women. First impressions count and dressing formally signals respect for your counterparts.

Tamil culture carries a strong sense of regional pride. Acknowledging the city's distinct identity and heritage, rather than treating it as simply another Indian business destination, is something local professionals genuinely notice and appreciate.

Sights in Chennai

Chennai has a cultural and historical offering that makes extended stays genuinely rewarding. Marina Beach, stretching for several kilometres along the city's eastern edge, is at its most atmospheric in the early morning, worth setting the alarm for at least once during your visit. Fort St. George, the oldest surviving English fortification in India and now home to a museum and government offices, offers a vivid window into the city's colonial past, as does the grand Madras High Court building nearby.

The Kapaleeshwarar Temple in the Mylapore neighbourhood is one of the most important Dravidian temples in the region, and the streets surrounding it with their flower markets, silk shops, and music academies give a strong sense of the city's cultural fabric. For those visiting between December and January, the Margazhi festival transforms the city into an extraordinary celebration of classical music and dance, with performances taking place across venues throughout Chennai.
