Greensboro is a city in North Carolina, USA. It’s the 3rd most densely populated city in
North Carolina, and the 68th most densely populated city in the USA.
It’s the main county seat for Guildford County and is also the largest city in
the county. It has a population of more than 285,000, and encompasses some
63,000 families. The city has a humid subtropical climate, with hot summers and
short, cool winters. It maintains a sister-city connection with the following
places: Montbeliard (France), Buiucani sector (Moldova) and Yingkou (China).
Greensboro has been occupied for thousands of years, and was
home to Quaker migrants who settled in the area in around 1750. Many of these
original settlers set up local religious services, and formed community groups.
With that, the city’s population began to grow, and, before long, Greensboro
was the most important Quaker hub in North Carolina.
In 1840, Greensboro was designated a spot on a new railroad
line, and continued to grow rapidly as a result. This transport link greatly improved
access to Greensboro, and led to it being nicknamed the Gate City. At this
point in time, Greenboro was home to various textile companies, which continued
trading into the 21st century.
Today, Greensboro is home to such textile businesses as
Galey & Lord, Unifi and VF Corporation – which represents the brands Lee,
Wrangler, North Face and Nautica. Its popular attractions include the
Greensboro Science Center, the International Civil Rights Center & Museum,
the Greensboro Child Museum and the Greensboro History Museum. Other sites
worth visiting include The Greensboro Arboretum and the Guilford Courthouse
National Military Park.
Greensboro is served by trains, taxis and long distance
buses. A daily Amtrak service runs from Greensboro to cities including New
York, Baltimore Richmond, Charlotte, Atlanta, Birmingham and New Orleans. The closest
airport to Greensborough is Piedmont Triad International Airport.
