All you need to know about Bethesda

Bethesda is a destination in Montgomery County, Maryland, northwest of Washington. Officially a census-designated place, it’s located along a major thoroughfare and has no main boundaries. It has a population of over 60,000 and a total surface area of 13.2 square miles. The area has a humid subtropical climate, with hot summers and cool, often snowy winters. As a hub for government and corporate headquarters, Bethesda provides the perfect stomping ground for business travel professionals with its excellent array of corporate housing and serviced apartments.

Bethesda began life as an ancient Native America Trail, and was first explored by English fur trader, Henry Fleet, who visited the area in the 17th century. Further expeditions were carried out shortly thereafter and led to the emergence of tobacco farming, as a popular trade in Bethesda. Rural tobacco farming remained important throughout the 1700s and helped attract new business travellers to the area.

Bethesda was a small crossroads village for much of the 19th century, up until the arrival of a streetcar line in 1891. This new line marked the beginning of suburbanisation in Bethesda and allowed the area’s population to grow. The arrival of the personal automobile was pivotal in revolutionising Bethesda’s transport links, which, in turn, drove up tourism to the area and paved the way for the arrival of corporate housing and serviced apartments.

Today, Bethesda is an unincorporated community home to important medical institutions and research centres. It also plays host to numerous ambassador residences. Popular attractions in Bethesda include the Strathmore theatre, Cabin John Regional Park and the Capital Crescent bike trail. With so much to see and do in Bethesda, your business travel experience there needn’t just be work-focused.

Bethesda is served by Washington Metro’s red line which offers reliable transport to and from the area. It’s also linked by the Maryland Transit Administration’s Purple Line. There are various buses which run through Bethesda and on to neighbouring areas. The closest airport to Bethesda is Baltimore Washington International, at roughly 25 miles away.
