Whitby is a seaside town in the North East of England, located on the Yorkshire Coast. It’s approximately 32 miles from Middlesbrough, and 47 miles from York.
Scarborough is the nearest city to Whitby, at just a 35 minute drive away, and North York Moors National Park is also close by. The town has a population of more than 13,000, and the main language spoken is English.
Whitby has a rich history. To the east of the town is Whitby Abbey which is believed to be built in 657 AD by the Anglo-Saxon King of Northumbria, Oswy. Between 1700 and 1914 Whitby, had a large amount of textile activity with the manufacturing of sailcloth, and eventually tailoring, dressmaking and drapery.
Whitby is easily reached and well connected. If you are travelling by car from the North, take the A171 out of Guisborough, and follow that road into the Whitby. Those commuting from the South East can reach the town on the same road from Scarborough. Coastliner, a local bus provider, offers various connections to and from the town. Whitby is equally well served by trains. The closest airport to Whitby is Durham Tees Valley Airport, at 45 miles away.
