All you need to know about Margate

Margate is a seaside town in Kent, located roughly 15 miles from Canterbury. It overlooks North Foreland, and is made up of the following areas: Garlinge, Palm Bay, Cliftonville and Westbrook. As a popular coastal destination and commercial hub, Margate boasts a generous selection of serviced apartments which are great for business travel professionals.

The town has a population of more than 61,000. The language spoken is English and the currency used is the British Pound. Margate is twinned with the following towns: Split (Croatia), Larnaca (Cyprus), Astana (Kazakhstan), Malmo (Sweden), Yalta (Crimea), Ida-Oberstein (Germany). The town has an oceanic climate, with mild summers and winters.

Margate has been a seaside resort for over 250 years. Much like the neighbouring towns Broadstairs and Ramsgate, it’s served as a key holiday destination, drawing people from all over with its quaint beaches, attractions and serviced apartments.

Originally a poor fishing town, Margate has grown with the arrival of the railway which has connected it to other parts of the country. In 1856, Margaret Jetty was built and survived until 1978, when it was struck by a storm. As the town’s transport links have improved, so too has its reputation as a business travel hub.

Margate’s economy is a mixture of manufacturing, real estate, construction, education, hospitality, social work and retail. A considerable number of people living there work in hospitality, and hold down jobs in restaurants, bars and serviced apartments.

Margate has historically been home to windmills. Famous examples include Draper’s Mill, Town Mill and Hooper’s Mill. Today, Margate remains a popular haunt for holidaymakers. Top attractions include Margate Museum, The Shell Grotto, The Hornby Visitor Centre, and Tudor House. For shopping, head to The Old Kent Market, and, for nature, visit Westbrook Bay.

Margate is served by buses, coaches and trains. There are more 40 bus routes which run through the town, and approximately seven coach services. Margate railway station offers direct links to the train stations London Victoria and St. Pancras. The closest airport to Margate is London City Airport, at 76 miles away. With great public transport at its disposal, Margate makes for a convenient business travel destination.
