New Caledonia is classified as a special collectively of
France, and consists of an archipelago of islands, including the main island of
Grande Terre. New Caledonia is located in the southwest Pacific Ocean, south of
Vanuatu.
With one of the largest economies in the South Pacific, it
is unsurprising that the demand for corporate serviced apartments in New
Caledonia is growing. Much of the land on the islands is unsuitable for commercial
agriculture, meaning the food accounts for approximately 20% of imports. However,
New Caledonia is one of the world’s largest producers of yams, taro, plantains
and coconuts. The island community exports large amounts of nickel ore and
ferronickel - in fact, New Caledonian soils contains 25% of the world’s nickel
resources. Furthermore, the archipelago’s economy is supported by considerable
French investment and financial backing.
New Caledonia has a relatively underdeveloped tourism
sector, especially when compared with nearby island communities. Vanuatu has
roughly 200,000 tourists visiting every year, whereas New Caledonia averages
100,000. As nickel mining remained the dominant form of income in the islands
for many years, tourism was not heavily invested in until nickel prices fell in
the 1970s. Holiday packages were promoted to Australians in an attempt to boost
tourist interest – and by the 1980s New Caledonia was targeting Japan with the
majority of its marketing campaigns. As the islands become better known for tourist
opportunities, numbers are likely to grow.
