Liège is a major municipality in Belgium that lies on the
Meuse River. It’s what’s known as a Wallonia city – meaning it’s located in
Belgium’s Wallonia region to the south of the country. It shares a border with
Netherlands and is also situated close to Germany. The city is predominately
French speaking. However, German and Dutch are also spoken too.
The city has population of more than 198,000, and is made up
of the communes Angleur, Bresseoux, Chênée, Glain, Grivegnee. Previous findings
indicate that Liège is one of Belgium’s most densely populated urban areas,
after Antwerp and Brussels.
Liège is a major educational centre, and home to more than 24
academic institutions, including the University of Liege. Once famous for its
steel-making, Liege boasted various mills and blast furnaces. Nowadays its
economy is increasingly diversified, and focused on everything from space
technology to the production of chocolate and water. The city is served by Liège
Airport, and offers various direct rail links.
Its main attractions are a mixture of historic buildings,
sacred sites and museums. Places worth visiting include the Opera Royal de
Wallonie, and La Boverie - an art museum boasting lush parkland. While you’re
there, check out the historic walking area, Coteaux de la Citadelle - which is
made up of various key monuments, and is perfect for a stroll.
