Weather in Gurugram

Weather icom

Gurugram has a climate shaped by both monsoon-humid subtropical and semi-arid conditions, with significant temperature variation across the year. Summers (April to June) are hot and dry, with temperatures regularly reaching 38–42°C, minimising outdoor exposure during peak afternoon hours is advisable. Hot, dry westerly winds known locally as 'loo' can make conditions particularly uncomfortable in May and June. The monsoon arrives in late June or July, bringing some relief from the heat alongside heavy rainfall and high humidity, a compact umbrella is essential, and some road flooding is possible in lower-lying areas.

The post-monsoon period from October onwards is pleasant, and the winter months from November to February are comfortably mild by day, typically 15–22°C, though nights and early mornings can be significantly cooler. Dense fog in January and February can occasionally affect visibility and early-morning travel. One additional consideration for winter visitors: Gurugram can experience significant air pollution and smog between October and January, with the Air Quality Index sometimes reaching poor or severe levels due to agricultural stubble burning, vehicle emissions, and temperature inversion. Monitoring a live AQI app such as IQAir or SAFAR is advisable during these months. Serviced apartments include air conditioning as standard, essential during the summer months.

Currency in Gurugram

Indian Rupee (₹)

The Indian Rupee is the official currency. Card payments are widely accepted across hotels, restaurants, and retail centres in Gurugram. Cash remains useful and is essential for smaller vendors, street food, auto-rickshaws, and tips; ATMs are widely available throughout the city's commercial sectors and malls. International Visa and Mastercard cards are broadly accepted, though notifying your bank before travel is advisable.

Digital payment apps such as Google Pay and PhonePe are ubiquitous among local vendors, and are a dominant means of pay across India, however the key requirements are having an Indian bank account and phone number therefore for those travelling internationally it is not a convenient means of pay.  Tipping is appreciated but not mandatory, 10% is considered generous at restaurants, and rounding up taxi fares is common practice.

Health & Wellbeing in Gurugram

Private healthcare in Gurugram is excellent, with the city having earned a strong reputation as a medical tourism destination. Public healthcare varies in quality, so most international travellers use private facilities. Leading private hospitals include Medanta, Fortis Memorial Research Institute, and Artemis Hospital, all well-equipped and with English-speaking staff.

Drinking tap water is not recommended, stick to bottled or filtered water throughout your stay, and exercise caution with ice in smaller establishments. Staying well hydrated is especially important during the hot summer months.

Leisure Valley Park is a popular green space where locals gather for morning jogs, yoga, and evening walks, a welcome respite from the city's pace. For something further afield, the Aravalli Biodiversity Park spans 380 acres with well-maintained walking and cycling trails, while Sultanpur National Park, a bird sanctuary around 15 kilometres from the city centre, offers a quiet natural retreat, particularly during the winter migration season.

Several serviced apartments in Gurugram include on-site fitness facilities, which are particularly valuable during the summer months when outdoor exercise is best avoided in the middle of the day.

Plug Type in Gurugram

India uses Type C, D, and M plugs. Type D, a three-pin round plug in a triangular formation is the most common in Gurugram. The standard voltage is 230V. Most serviced apartments include universal adapters or multi-socket points, but bringing a travel adapter is advisable if you are arriving from the UK, US, or continental Europe.

Cuisine in Gurugram

Gurugram’s food scene reflects the cosmopolitan nature of its workforce, a mix of North Indian staples, pan-Indian regional cuisines, and a well-developed international dining offering that caters to the city's large expat and multinational community.

DLF Cyber Hub has become the city's most prominent dining destination, with over 100 restaurants, cafés, and bars spread across a pedestrianised complex that functions as a social hub for Gurugram's corporate world. Everything from craft beer and sushi to Punjabi dhabas and South Indian tiffin restaurants is represented here, and it remains a lively spot for client entertaining or winding down after a working day.

Sector 29 Market is another strong option, packed with street food stalls serving chaat, kebabs, and momos alongside sit-down restaurants and bars. North Indian cuisine is the most prevalent across the city, so dishes such as paneer, dal, butter chicken, parathas, and chole kulche are well worth trying. Vegetarian options are plentiful, and menus in most restaurants use the standard Indian green dot (vegetarian) and red dot (non-vegetarian) system to clearly identify dishes.

Language and Key Phrases in Gurugram

Hindi is the primary spoken language, though as a major international corporate hub, English is widely spoken across business settings, hotels, restaurants, and by much of the local population. You will have no difficulty communicating in English day-to-day. That said, a few Hindi phrases go a long way and are warmly received.

  • Namaste (nah-mah-stay) — Hello / Greetings (palms pressed together)
  • Shukriya / Dhanyavaad — Thank you
  • Haan / Nahin — Yes / No
  • Kitna hai? — How much is it?
  • Kahan hai? — Where is...?
  • Alvida — Goodbye

Transport in Gurugram

Getting around Gurugram requires some planning, particularly given the density of road traffic on major arterials like NH-48 and Golf Course Road during peak hours of 8–10am and 6–8pm. That said, the city has good public transport options for central areas and strong road connectivity across the wider NCR.

Delhi Metro & Rapid Metro: The Delhi Metro Yellow Line connects Gurugram to central Delhi, terminating at Millennium City Centre (formerly HUDA City Centre). At Sikanderpur, the Rapid Metro connects to DLF Cyber City and key sectors along Golf Course Road via 11 stations, now operated by Delhi Metro Rail Corporation. The Rapid Metro uses the same smart card system as the Delhi Metro, making transfers straightforward. A significant metro expansion is currently under construction, a new 28km loop planned to connect Millennium City Centre to Cyber City via 27 elevated stations, targeted for completion by 2029.

App-Based Cabs: Uber and Ola operate reliably across Gurugram and are the most practical option for reaching business parks not served by the metro. Pre-booking for airport transfers is strongly recommended.

Airport: Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI) is approximately 15–25 kilometres away depending on your location in the city, making Gurugram one of the most convenient NCR cities for international arrivals.

SilverDoor Tip: Download the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) app for live route planning and fare information. For daily commuting, the metro is consistently the fastest option during peak hours.

Cultural Context

Indian business culture is built on relationships and respect for hierarchy. Conservative and formal attire is the norm in professional settings, suits for men, and modest professional clothing for women. Titles and formalities matter; addressing colleagues by their professional title followed by their surname is a mark of respect.

The traditional greeting is Namaste, with palms pressed together and a slight bow, though handshakes are standard in corporate environments and are typically initiated by the more senior person.

Punctuality is expected of international visitors, though local counterparts may operate on a slightly more relaxed sense of timing, patience and flexibility are valued qualities in return. Relationship-building is central to Indian business culture; taking time to connect personally before moving to business matters is always well received.

Gurugram’s culture is diverse and cosmopolitan, shaped by a large population of professionals from across India and the world. Major festivals including Holi, Diwali, Dussehra, and Shivratri are celebrated with great energy throughout the city, if your visit coincides with one, expect some changes to transport and business hours, but also a genuinely memorable experience.

Women travelling alone are advised to use app-based cabs rather than hailing vehicles on the street, particularly after dark, and to remain in well-lit, populated areas in the evenings.
