Lonely Planet's cities to visit in 2013
30th October 2012

It’s not even November yet but in the SilverDoor office lots of us are already planning our trips for 2013. And we’re not the only ones: Lonely Planet has just published a list of top 10 cities to visit next year, as part of its Best in Travel series for 2013.

Not all of them are corporate travel destinations: Puerto Iguazú in Argentina is more famous for its spectacular waterfall than its businesses. But all the cities listed have a buzz in the air which is, more often than not, buoyed by economic growth and hope about the future.

The number one city is San Francisco, also recently voted the best place to live in America by Businessweek.com. The city that gave birth to Wikipedia and Twitter benefits from its proximity to Silicon Valley and is famed for its open, tolerant atmosphere.

Second is Amsterdam (pictured), which will celebrate a number of anniversaries in 2013 including 400 years of the canal ring and Vincent van Gogh’s 160th birthday. We represent an eclectic range of serviced apartments in Amsterdam and our recommendations for the city will feature in the next issue of our newsletter, out on 1st November.

Other key business travel destinations on the list include Hyderabad, which alongside Bangalore and Chennai is one of India’s electronics hubs; Beijing, which has built on the success of the 2008 Olympic Games to become a buzzing, rapidly changing metropolis; and Montréal, Canada’s second largest city which boasts a lively mix of cultures and languages.

Puerto Iguazú isn’t the only surprising inclusion: Addis Ababa is also on the list. Often named the capital of democracy in Africa, it hosts the African Union and the headquarters of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa. Benefiting from Ethiopia’s rapid growth, it has a lively atmosphere with a thriving restaurant scene and nightlife.
